![]() Dave Wakeling The English Beat | Dave Wakeling The English Beat A story behind every song… Dave Wakeling is a hell of a nice guy! Dave loves to tell you the stories behind his songs, either from stage or after the show. Ask any one of the thousands of fans who have met him over the years and that’s what you’ll hear. Never mind that Dave is the singer/songwriter from two of the most popular bands of the end of the millennium, The English Beat and General Public, he’s a stand up man from Brum. Whether it’s the personal as political in “How Can You Stand There”, making politics personal in “Stand Down Margaret”, taking a stand against global warming as he did with Greepeace’s “Alternative NRG”, or helping little kids stand up proudly with “Smile Train”, Dave has always stood for something. And like the mighty Redwoods of his adopted home of California (dude!), it’s been easy for Dave to take a stand because of his strong roots… www.davewakeling.com/home.asp

![]() The Old 97's | The Old 97's Although they became one of the most enduring bands in the alternative country-rock catalog, Old 97′s drew inspiration from a broad range of genres, including the twangy stomp of cowpunk and the melodies of power pop. Formed in 1993 by frontman Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond, the group spent the bulk of the decade posed on the brink of mainstream success, issuing albums that often drew warm reviews but never yielded a substantial hit. Old 97′s tightened their sound as the decade drew to a close, retaining their bar-band vigor while introducing a stronger pop/rock sound on albums like Too Far to Care and Satellite Rides. Miller also mounted a solo career in the early 2000s, but the band remained together nonetheless, continuing to release material with their original lineup intact into the following decade. http://old97s.com/

Black Francis (former Pixies frontman) | Black Francis (former Pixies frontman) Black Francis is the stage name contrived by and for Charles Thompson during his residency in college rock band the Pixies, a period that ran from the group's formation in Boston during 1986 until 1993 when the group split up. Thompson's next show business identity was as Frank Black, often in the bandleading context of Frank Black and the Catholics. Publishing bean counters can watch for songwriting credits under both pseudonyms as well as under Charles Thompson; in the latter case he should not be confused with the famed classic jazz keyboardist whose works were recorded by Charlie Parker and many others. Thompson released many albums under his Frank Black moniker, but returned to the Black Francis name for 2007's Bluefinger, which was a concept album about the life and death of Dutch painter/punk rocker Herman Brood and featured some of Black's most ferocious rock in years. Still working under his Black Francis moniker, Black released the sexually charged NonStopErotik in 2010. Abbabubba, a B-sides and demos collection, arrived in 2011 along with The Golem, Francis' score for the 1920 silent film of the same name.

![]() Mission Of Burma | Mission Of Burma From the outset, 'Unsound' was not going to be like any other Mission of Burma album. As expected, the material is raw, primal and aggressive. They still have a signature knack for twisting even the most ferocious noise into complex structures. There are, of course, those killer hooks scattered throughout, but just not quite where you would expect. Yet with all three lead members resolutely making the decision to deliberately stretch their boundaries even further, they stepped out of their comfort zone to create their most rewarding, bewildering and multifaceted long-player yet. With a new label home, 'Unsound' will be released on Fire Records in July. | |||
