Music publishers' acquire, protect, and administer musical composition rights. Royalties are based on the songs themselves not from an artist's recording of a song. Every commercial use of a musical composition requires a license and compensation to the songwriter. The music publisher's role is to market songs for commercial use and to then ensure that the appropriate royalties are received.
